The Fearsome Threesome are back again this week as Kinshadow, Geoff and Ostron take you on a tour covering the grand universe that is the Space Sim. To start things off, in this week’s Squawk Box, NASA’s going to Marsprobably. On the Flight Deck we see what news has landed from your favourite space-sims as we cover:

We then debate advanced character customisation options, and finally we tune into the Feedback Loop and let you join in on the conversation.

This Week’s Community Question

  • Are advanced customisation systems necessary for immersion and increasing the appeal of a space sim? Or is it extra time and money put into a system that most people won’t bother with or notice?

C.O.Q.S. [pronounced koks] needs a copyright lawyer, Tony Hunter Esq. Wait, isn’t he at the state house full of COQS already? Great to hear Lennon is still providing great content.

Depends on the game. In cases where the game has you playing exclusively, or nearly so, as a vehicle, then it could easily be a waste of resources. In games like Star Citizen where you are playing as a PERSON in a multiplayer world, customization is very important.

Players tend to invest in and attach to things much more strongly when they have a sense of personal expression and creative input. It’s no longer the developer’s creation, it is the player’s. It is unique to them, it becomes personal. Add multiplayer ships and space stations to the mix where you’re interacting with other player’s characters on a regular basis and individually recognizable characters become even more important.

I hope Star Citizen finds a way sooner rather than later to allow for multiple body types as well.

    Cheers,

    Amon

I prefer as much customization as possible. I like individuality. The one thing that always bothered me about WoW was the cookie cutter-ness of it. My first MMO was Anarchy Online and you could be smaller, larger, taller or shorter. It was great, but I haven’t seen that kind of customization in awhile.
