Guard Frequency Episode 037 | Fish and Ships

Greetings Citizens and Civilians, and welcome to episode 37 of Guard Frequency, the universe’s premier Star Citizen podcast recorded on 6th September 2014 and released for streaming and download on Tuesday 9th September 2014 at GuardFrequency.com [Download this episode]

Although a little later than scheduled (after a website meltdown or two), Lennon, Tony and Geoff are back and better than ever. No? Well, still the same at least. In this week’s Squawk Box, Tony blows our minds with numbers so mind-bogglingly huge we’ve had to invent new terms to describe them. In CIG News we bring you everything that’s happening around the UEE including our weekly Crowd Funding Update, the latest delays to Arena Commander v0.9, August’s Monthly Report and Around The Verse episode 12. In Nuggets For Nuggets we continue to educate you about humanities space-neighbours as this week we discuss the Tevarin; and finally we tune into the Feedback Loop and let you join in on the conversation.

Topics Discussed

This Week’s Community Questions

  • Do you feel that some ships have been over-sold, stats-wise? Are there ships that you feel need to be more (or less) über based on what we know so far?

Great show as always gents and the corporate raiders were fabulous!

As has been said many times, the ship stats will change and therefore we should buy a ship based on what we like aesthetically. I bought the ships I have because they look cool to me! As long as the ability to melt ships stays until the stats are firm, I don’t see an issue as long as people get the point that stats will change. Don’t make ship decisions based on stats, Period.

    Great Show as usual guys.

I don’t feel most ships have been over/undersold because at this point, and even back when Geoff was paying for his vaunted Golden Ticket, all of these purchases are speculative. I think with most ships they’ve maintained the original intent; the Hornet’s still a military dogfighter, the Cutlass is still a badly disguised pirate ship, etc. The Connie is a bad basis for this argument I think because they billed it as a ship that could “do everything, but with friends!” It seems to me that’s still possible, for the most part, and the only thing that’s been lost is the theoretical possibility that you would have been able to park a combat Connie in the hangar, reconfigure all the hardpoints, and then fly off as an armored cargo hauler 15 minutes later. It’s possible CIG could be cited for some misleading advertising in that vein, but every other ship has had a clearly defined purpose and seems to have stuck with it.

Because Tony out and out told me to on-air, I’m going to continue my thread from last week. Tony mentioned and Geoff was concerned about “pay money for a speculative find at X coordinates” missions. It seems to me, based on the descriptions we’ve gotten so far, those types of missions are going to be how career explorers make their livelihood. After the second day of launch when every jump point has been discovered already, the explorers will have to scour systems finding wrecks, asteroid fields, and pirate nests that they themselves won’t be able to exploit, but they’ll be selling the info on where to find them. They won’t necessarily know if the asteroid field is full of iron or platinum, nor will they know if the pirate nest has 5 or 50 pirates there.

You can never go wrong with Monty Python, wonderful episode. I have a feeling as to the ships stats, that currently even the devs dont have a clue as to how it will all work out. I think they are all still so far behind the 8-ball they are just trying to get everything done, before people start losing hope. The game will be awesome when it comes out, but some people will still lose hope if either game isnt at least in beta by the end of the year.
