Guard Frequency Episode 135 | Glitzy Bits Without Badgers

Written by Lennon on . Posted in Podcasts

Greetings Citizens and Civilians, you’re tuned to episode 135, of Guard Frequency — the best damn space sim podcast ever! This episode was recorded on Friday 26th August 2016 and released for streaming and download on Tuesday, August 30th 2016 at GuardFrequency.com [Download this episode]

Kinshadow’s back again this week and joins Ostron and Geoff to bring you your weekly dose of space-sim goodness. In this week’s Squawk Box, it’s been another rough week for space-ka-teers around the world. On the Flight Deck we see what news has landed from your favourite space-sims as we cover:

Next, we debate free to play, and finally we tune into the Feedback Loop and let you join in on the conversation.

Squawk Box

In case you missed something…

A quick note for those of you who may have been away from the show for a few weeks and are noticing a distinct lack of dulcet British tones and legal precision. Tony and Lennon have both reluctantly reduced their involvement in regular broadcasting with Guard Frequency. Lennon’s situation has forced him to take an extended, continuous break. Tony is running for State office in Kansas, and his campaign duties mean he can’t commit to regular recording times. Ostron is serving as Lennon’s replacement, and during the times that Tony is unavailable, Mr Kinshadow will be our go-to replacement. In general, though, you’re probably going to hear a greater variety of voices going forward as people adjust their schedules. Geoff, of course, isn’t going anywhere.

  • Are free accounts in games a good way to attract players who might otherwise be skeptical? Maybe you think it just provides an avenue for abuses and exploitation of in-game mechanics?

    Loved the show.

Free to play models are hard to balance, not only are they ripe with abuse, but if too many artificial boundaries are placed on the players, they create bad press.

F2P accounts are good since in any MMO, players are ultimately make the game and the lower barrier to entry, the better. I’d love to eventually see a Star Citizen F2P method where players start with no ships or money and have to work their way by crewing ships, hiring themselves out as soldiers, etc…

Guess I’ll take a listen here as the file downcast pulled off the feed was a repeat of 134.

Yeah, we have a suspected cause, going to try and prevent that in the future.

I feel the free to play in Eve is amazing. The limitations aren’t terrible, 5mil SP in total, faction T1 Frigates, Destroyers, and Cruisers, and all applicable faction weapons (tech 1). That’s several months of paid play time if one focuses on that training. There’s the chance of abuse, but in Eve, what really constitutes abuse in a sandbox where everything except taking it out of the game is expected and endorsed?

As for other games, I agree that Rift has done it right. SWTOR was the worst of them all.

    Great show.
