After that we’re debating pop-culture references in games before finally tuning into the Feedback Loop and letting you join in on the conversation.

This Week’s Community Question

  • Are developer-created “Easter Eggs” referencing other IPs tributes to historical legacies and extra bonuses for fans? Or are they just immersion breaking laziness to make up for mediocre world-building?

    Loved the show.

I love easter eggs as long as they are not too obvious, or shoved in your face.

Easter eggs done well, and by that I mean in such as manner as they could seamlessly exist in the fictional world without being a reference to something else, are great.

If your immersion is ‘broken’ by seeing AMD (in this case standing for Accelerated Mass Design) on the side of a spaceship, perhaps your immersion is lazy, not the developers.

I like Easter eggs. They do have to be done well, and some of the best ones have to be found off the beaten path. I also think that they don’t necessarily break immersion and are quite realistic when in a game about the future. Whenever we do make our actual voyages into the deep black, people are going to name stations and planets like Terra and Tatooine and Nimrod.

… After they use Spacey McSpaceFace.
