Links and the Like

Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous gave its usual lore nod to a player organized event via a GalNet article, so everyone’s happy now right? Also, during this week’s Frameshift Live, FDev senior designer Derin Halil talked with Arthur and Bruce about the process of updating the game and Bruce teasing the updates QUOTE Just around the corner END QUOTE. Arthur provided a bit of context for that, being “the coming months”. So, I guess SOON (™). In the meantime, Tony’s mad about a design choice that has annoyed him forever, and somebody made a cool video that you should go check out if you’re an Expanse fan.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen sent Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 3.17.2 to the PTU Wave 1, and announced that this feature packed update will include a ⅔ server wipe. This means that while your in-game cash and in-game ships will disappear, your reputation will precede you…. Uh, and also follow you. Also, in order to celebrate the end of your character’s fortune and fleet – but not your fame – they are spinning up BOTH the Jumptown and Nine Tails live events. The only thing missing is a free fly week… oh wait! There it is, coming on July 7. And finally, certain types of griefing are now a bannable offense. Spawn campers and stream snipers are now going to have to go back to Elite Dangerous to have any fun at all.

Community Questions

  • Can you devise a better mechanic to combat spawn camping a.k.a. Pad sniping in Star Citizen?
  • Are we going to see the filling of the Thargoid Fun Hole in the “coming months”?

    Great episode everyone.

By the way, thank you for all of your soapbox rants, ALL OF THEM. Henry you must be in pain politically over the last 10 years or so, sorry to hear that. Bottom line, digress whenever you feel the need to.

The only other mechanic that I can think of, would be to have a “hanger” that spits out fighters to deal with the anti-social players for SC. Possibly with a variation for ground involvement, i.e. “stormtroopers” charging out of nearby doors.

I cant frakkin believe that you dont remember Felgercarb, I mean what the Frell!

My two cents as a long-time listener: silence is complicity.

I have to agree with Tony that there’s a fairly straight line from g@merg@te to where we are politically, and that a movement which started about video games shifted into being a groundswell of support for people like Trump. A lot of that was aided by more mainstream media outlets (ie, not podcasts) trying to give “both sides” their time, even though one side was engaging in a campaign of harassment against game developers, women in the gaming scene, and anything they perceived as “woke”.

But like I said, silence is complicity. I’m reminded of the Parable Of The Punk Bar. where a bartender ejects a patron for having nazi tattoos, and when asked why, explains that if given a comfortable space, they’ll soon grow in numbers and then that bar becomes a bar for nazi punks. So in a way, Tony is just making sure the trash takes itself out. If you don’t explicitly state it for the human felgercarb, they’ll fill in the blanks on their own, and they’ll typically assume you must feel the same way they do. It’s an unfortunate side effect of brain worms.

From a legal standpoint, there’s dangerous precedent being set by SCOTUS right now. Trying not to slippery-slope this, but we are already seeing the ruling being used against trans people, we’ll probably see further rulings affect queer people as a whole if Obergefell is struck down as well. That’s not just people in the ether to me, that’s my friends and family. So thanks for standing up for them even if it’s just a personal soapbox on a podcast.

And yeah, I’m part of this community because I want to hang out and play space games, I just don’t want to do it with fascists and nazis. I’m not using the term broadly either, I’m referring specifically to people who don’t think certain people deserve the bare minimum of human rights because of their race, skin color, religion, political beliefs, etc. There’s an entire historical precedent for not associating with those people I don’t need to get into, but I doubt other people in the Guard Freq community want to share space with people like that either. So good on ya, Tony, for speaking up and using your platform. If that cost you listeners, they weren’t listeners you would have wanted anyways.
