Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous had a little hiccup with the Console Transfer Portal and had to ask affected players politely to wait for a fix. Instead, some players tried an interesting workaround: resetting their characters. Frontier has apparently fixed the issue and is hopefully able to recover the “creatively” deleted user data. Also, Elite Meets are still alive in the UK, and Wotherspoon is helping with something called “ECM” in a place called “Hilton St. Anne, Wokingham” on a date called “19th August 2023.” At least that last part was written in American. Finally, Elite has a new set of community goals with some… suboptimal reward choices. I thought we had that issue fixed, folks.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen REMOVED Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 3.18.1 from the PTU, and then REMOVED Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candi – Yeah, Tony, I’m not doing that again. After they took 3.18.1 OFF the PTU they also took 3.18.2 OFF the “E” PTU and moved it to the PTU with a new patch. This new patch features a new Core Tech feature: Density Manager Optimizations. They have QUOTE Updated Density Manager values to be more aggressive for removing unneeded entities in the PU to improve server/client performance. END QUOTE So much for all the coffee mugs I was going to leave lying around. Then, after all that, they moved 3.18.1 onto the “E” PTU and thought that they might patch it yesterday or today, but they didn’t. This comes after a week where every server version went down and hasn’t fully recovered yet. Meanwhile the Live game is still 3.18.0 and is still broken. But the crowning achievement was another forum firestorm caused by the PR team constantly telling everyone that there would likely be more wipes, but your space cash and reputation progress would be safe. Guess what? They’re not. The databases will be completely wiped at least two more times. And last but not least, Tony spotted a few things in the Squadron 42 update that he needs to highlight. Everything’s fine, just fine.

No Man’s Sky

No Man’s Sky has released update 4.2 – and the obligatory dot-dot patch 4.2.1 on Steam only – everyone else has to wait for those 4 bugs to get fixed. Yes, four. This one – also free to current owners – is called “Interceptor.” And like the title suggests, you’ll do a lot of intercepting: corrupted sentinel guardians and enemy capital ships for example. You can also salvage crashed sentinel interceptors and claim them for your own use – with a whole new tech tree and resource collection branch. The sentinels also have updated AI for your running and gunning pleasure. There’s a new multiplayer mission and a slew of other creatures, optimizations, bug fixes and enhanced VR support. And flame throwers and cloaking devices.

Hunternet Starfighter

And I spoke with Fernando about Hunternet Starfighter this week when he spontaneously dropped into our discord. He’s just released his own version of “persistence” to the game and, in stark contrast to some other games we cover, he’s actually pretty pleased with it.

Community Questions

  • What do you think about Hunternet Starfighter’s different approach to the “death mechanic?” If there is a lower penalty for dying, does that make it easier to risk losing your ship while you’re offline?
  • What was going on with this week’s somesay? Take a crack at fixing for us… or at least explaining the joke.

The Hunternet death mechanic sounds interesting…. kinda wonder how the team dynamics will work out – will I feel like I need to “top off” the kitty for the team when I die? Or will it be more the case that nobody cares when the kitty is full… but when it’s empty,k then get thee to the mines, scrub!
As for the Some Say – Fossil is a brand of watch. Not sure how to fix it, since the joke doesn’t work with Rolex-powered cars. Maybe add something about trying to switch from Fossil-fueled to Rolex-fueled but the world wasn’t his Oyster?
Last, but not least – they’ve figured out how to get testing for 3.18.1 ! Put on a free Fly!
    WTFO?
I can’t see a good end to this. The need PES to work, but they’ve nerfed it. Then they need to do STATIC server meshing…. then Dynamic server meshing… And I do mean NEED, because how else are the whales going to get their fleet battles? Lots of expensive ships that can’t be used if the servers can’t handle the player numbers needed to crew the ships.
    Keep up the good work!
