Links & The Like

Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous released the great 18.08 Type 8 Update – not late – on the correct date right out of the gate. There were a few points in the patch notes that we didn’t cover last week – like the new engineering materials available for fighting Thargoids, upgrades to space suits and the easier Engineer unlocks – that we’ll bring up. But it wouldn’t be an Elite update without at least a couple of hiccups, and our squadron test pilot would like a few words with the Type 8 design team.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 3.24.0-PTU.9277884 to the Wave 1 PTU Server. This patch fixes a few of the Known Issues that were present in the last patch and if it doesn’t fall over, may open to Wave 2 over the weekend. In other news, Squadron 42 is making certain scenes 10 times longer and a complicated scene in Chapter 12 is now functioning again after being brought QUOTE up to date END QUOTE. And there will be fire on board your ships in 4.0 according to ISC, and there will be a jump point Tier Zero there too. But, guess what folks? It’s early days, according to Disco Lando, and don’t you dare tell him otherwise. Because it’s a whole new paradigm at CIG! From now on, it’s going to be gameplay over visuals! And they took out the jump point rings to prove it!

Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 ruined everything Tony loves about the game, and he is crying into his decaf Earl Grey. The new patch made another balancing pass at several of the game’s weapons, and the new enemies have completely changed the game at the higher difficulties. Also, the new fire-themed warbond is out, just as the designers made those high level enemies less vulnerable to fire. This is almost Elite Dangerous levels of “screw you, players, you’re gonna suffer and you’re gonna ask for more.”

Community Questions

  • Is CIG’s new commitment to gameplay over visuals a one-time fad, or is it a paradigm shift that will synergize their core competencies going forward?
  • How do you feel when devs nerf your favorite feature for the good of the game? Blind rage? Reluctant acceptance? Start your own podcast?
