Links & The Like

Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous is sloooooowly advancing the mysterious mystery of the alien trees, by hinting at some interesting medical properties via the in-game fiction. And some of the pods are opening up. Again, probably no cause for alarm or panic there. But it did remind us of an old theory from a couple of years ago. This theory is supported by the three most important pillars of game design: 1) building from recognizable narrative, 2) efficient repurposing of existing resources and 3) laziness. And that can mean only one thing is popping out of those pods: Humagoids.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 4.4 10733565 to the LIVE server yesterday. And then they released 10753606 to the Hotfix channel and “canaried” 10744215 to a few distributed game servers. As you can no doubt tell by all the concurrently running version numbers, things are going JUST GREAT. Accounts are once again getting locked, entire inventories have been lost, and missions are going missing. But don’t worry, people are also cheesing the referral program too. And if you can’t log in to play the game, you can always watch a few Twitch streams and get a few Twitch drops, if you like hackers hacking all the hacks! As weird as it may seem, all of this is going to result in record amounts of fundraising for CIG. We can’t explain it, we can only gawk in wonder.

Dune Awakening / The Expanse: Osiris Reborn

Dune Awakening broke the cardinal rule of the Imperium this week. The spice did not flow. Even after two patches to fix the patch that stopped the spice. But it’s fixed now. And we’re going to start talking about The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, the new RPG from Owlcat Games. Even though we know practically nothing about it. But that has never stopped us before and it certainly won’t today.

Community Questions

  • What does it mean to “canary” a server? Or was it “canarying” a patch? Either way, do you agree with Brian’s definition or do you have a different one? There is literally no wrong answer.
  • WHAT’S IN THE PODS?
