News We Didn’t Use

  • GalCop are holding the first ever Elite: Dangerous Olympics to raise money for charity. Sign up to events and go for the gold whilst raising money for Special Effect 
  • Shroud of the Avatar is running a cross-promotion with Star Citizen. Two packages are available for purchase. Each provides you with items for the Shroud of the Avatar game as well as a ship-based package of goodies for Star Citizen.

In case you missed something…

A quick note for those of you who may have been away from the show for a few weeks and are noticing a distinct lack of dulcet British tones and legal precision. Tony and Lennon have both reluctantly reduced their involvement in regular broadcasting with Guard Frequency. Lennon’s situation has forced him to take an extended, continuous break. Tony is running for State office in Kansas, and his campaign duties mean he can’t commit to regular recording times. Ostron is serving as Lennon’s replacement, and during the times that Tony is unavailable, Mr Kinshadow will be our go-to replacement. In general, though, you’re probably going to hear a greater variety of voices going forward as people adjust their schedules. Geoff, of course, isn’t going anywhere.

    Like Geoff,

    I don’t so much care about the hype thing, so I’m gonna skip it. 🙂

    Regarding text chat and voice chat. The examples given of the downsides of text chat are spot on.

    Text chat however offers some things that voice chat cannot, primarily in the realm of roleplaying. While it falls flat as a method to communicate and coordinate during a fast action sequence, it can shine when attempting to portray a character.

    My acting ability is limited, and the characters I can portray are even more so. Text chat allows a person to play a character of any age, race, gender, temperament, species etc. Voice chat can make this impossible.

    Text also has real advantages when it comes to folks that speak English as a second language.

    Star Citizen should provide a robust tool set for BOTH text and voice communications.

    The answer to your question is of course, both.

    As you probably heard No Man Sky had its first meeting of players within 2 days of its release. Even though the developer clearly indicated the vastness of the game would mean the chances of this happening would be “pretty much zero.” What was worse is that once these players confirmed they were in the same place at the same time, they were not able to see or interact with each other.

    The hype around this game was clearly what the developers wanted. It generated sales. However the game itself has already shown that some of its promises were clearly misleading.

    I believe this will always be the case. Developers keep forgetting that everything they say, especially on the internet will never be forgotten. And there will always be players out there ready to remind them. Because that’s how they can get back at the Developers for not making the game as they saw fit.

    Welcome Kinshadow! Glad to have an SC veteran on the show. I guess Geoff is the boss now. Oh boy.

    Hype is dangerous for devs and fans because it is a delicate balance to prevent over-promising and manage fan expectations. Communication is key and in the case of No Man’s Sky, they didn’t do much to negate the swell of expectations by the fans. I think it became a wild fire that they probably couldn’t have controlled if they wanted to.

    SC’s hype train has already circled the globe and the hype has died down so in SC’s case, time will calm the masses. It went from SUPER HYPE to SUPER NEGATIVE last year. Now it’s just business as usual. Everyone is in balance. LOL
