Links & the Like

Elite Dangerous

Elite Dangerous released Update 11, and now we can watch the jump animation from our captain’s chair of our fleet carriers. And it’s nice and good. Also you can clap your hands and turn off and on your lights from outside your ship. And dismiss it with a wave. So there’s that. And the return of the dev livestreams didn’t yield anything particularly newsworthy, so that’s all there is on that.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen is 90% sure you’ll be able to sell vendor trash in 3.17 when it gets out of Evocati and PTU testing, but don’t count on it yet. And it’s just an initial implementation. So it’s gonna be rough. And there’s other loot things that I’ll talk about too. Also, there’s another money making scheme that Tony will complain about.

I back a lot of board games on kickstarter. For modern board game kickstarters, there’s a lot of add ons: Expansions, minis, coins, card sleeves, etc. For those that aren’t in the board game space, it may surprise you to hear that some of these modern board games can cost anywhere from $100-$500+ to go “all-in”, and that’s before shipping. Usually, after the kickstarter closes, the pledgemanager opens to 1) allow backers to adjust their pledge, and 2) allow new people to come in and pledge towards the game. But the prices don’t change over time, although sometimes new add-ons might get added to the manager.

Some of the projects I’ve been on have been delayed a few years past their estimates. But in quite a few cases, especially on games that overly funded, they’ll gift some add-ons to the backers of the original kickstarter to thank the backers that have been waiting the longest. Or in the case of Shovel Knight, kickstarter backers got all the DLC for free, while that DLC was paid DLC for everyone else.

That’s what baffles me regarding the Star Citizen’s pledge/melt/token/buyback/CCU/warbound setup “metagame”. They’ve gamified pledging with a bunch of fear-of-missing-out tactics. I’m floored by the concept that digital assets that aren’t complete in a game that isn’t complete, are not just being sold but that their prices are increasing over time to maintain parity with the prices on newer digital assets that are also incomplete. And all the while, the focus is on rewarding and adding incentives to higher pledge amounts, rather than finding ways to thank backers, especially their earliest backers.

That’s what makes the concierge bonus feel less like a “genuine gift” to me. Especially since SQ42’s release date is still indeterminate.
