Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous started a new Community Goal this week, calling for supply deliveries and escorts in order to unlock a new pulse wave scanner that will let commanders mine the Titanic thargoid pimples on the skin of the motherships. But in an exciting new twist, they released the new scanner on the first day of the Community Goal. Unfortunately, they decided this bold new approach was a little counterproductive, so they un-released the new device. However, commanders who bought the new scanner were allowed to keep it, thereby rewarding their constant vigilance on twitter and reddit. And also, FDev avoided the inevitable rage and fury of those same commanders, so it’s a win for everyone. Also, there may be a way to avoid the new Glaive Hunters using some old Elite tricks – but no one is guaranteeing anything yet.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 3.19.1 to the PTU and everything is still great and wonderful. And when it comes to insurance claim times, things are even better than that, because QUOTE the team is aware and diligently working through reducing these times, which will soon roll out in Alpha 3.19.1 END QUOTE. And everyone was so happy that Zyloh wrote that, they immediately declared May 26 the “Epic day of Zyloh” and ordered him a cake. Just kidding! Nobody liked it and everyone was mad. Also, the Character Repair tool is back, and it neither fixes your character nor repairs all the issues. We will discuss. And finally, the pledge button is truly gone from the Squadron 42 page and has been replaced with a “sign up” button which invites you to subscribe to the newsletter. Research badgers have followed up and it seems our theory from last week is looking more plausible by the day.

Star Trek Resurgence

Star Trek Resurgence came out last Tuesday and contained a pretty terrible Day One bug, which was fixed the same day. After that, it was a 10-hour long Star Trek movie that introduced a new crew, brought in a couple of old favorites, and ratcheted up the stakes and consequences in a pretty compelling way. So long as you got past the technical glitches and occasionally clunky minigames.

Community Questions

  • In a single-player game, how much “fun mechanic” are you willing to trade for “good story?”
  • How much of the anger directed at CIG for “diligently addressing” the reclaim timer issue was deserved? Or should we just be grateful that they listened to the players at all?
