Elite: Dangerous
Elite Dangerous has announced a dot patch for Update 16. No details on what’s in it yet, but according to the schedule, you’ll see Update 16.01 on August 29, which is the same day you get the show. And on the heels of the Elite Community Meet last weekend, PitCon is scheduled for September 16. And this means nothing unless you happen to live in Great Britain. Could we get just one Elite thing over here in the States? I bet Tony would show up.
Star Citizen
Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 3.20 to Waves 1 and 2 of the PTU. As a reminder, these are the waves that contain subscribers, the top 2 layers of players who logged the most hours in the last 2 PTU cycles, and the LEGATUS NAVIUM and PRAETORIAN concierge backers. And those lucky few get first crack at the MISC Hull C. That highly anticipated ship contains a highly anticipated gameplay feature: the cargo loading timer. Yes, pilots may now be able to wait up to 5 minutes to fully load their ship. Even better, the process can be interrupted, resulting in delays, AND… wait for it… you might even get to start over from scratch! But wait, there’s more! If you don’t clear the loading area within a certain time, your ship might get impounded! And just in time for the release of Starfield, CIG hits the 600-million-dollar crowdfunding mark. Enjoy that last bit of publicity until October, boys.
Starfield & Baldur’s Gate 3
Starfield will be playable in early access starting late in the day on August 31. Life as we know it will cease for a time. Phone calls and emails will go unanswered. Texts will be ignored. Discord servers will be heavily redacted. And woe betide ye who put spoilers out on social media or anywhere else the innocent might stumble upon them!
No Man’s Sky
And finally, No Man’s Sky released yet another free update: Echoes. Which really makes us wonder how they are finding time to release these updates AND work on their next game.
Community Questions
- Aside from multiplayer features, what is Starfield missing that Star Citizen is offering – or has promised to offer eventually?
- Is there such a thing as a minimum viable feature? Is there a clear line between “too raw for release” and “good enough to count as gameplay?”
