Elite: Dangerous
Elite Dangerous released the first look at the Lakon Type 8, and the “cylon raider arm” fashion apparently never goes out of style. While there aren’t many details about the ship yet, we do know it will fit on a medium pad and will have a sizable cargo capacity. Also, FDev is not done tweaking the Thargoid war machinery, increasing and decreasing bounty payouts and server-side impacts of everything from escape pod rescues to rewards for blowing up Hydras. And finally, the first community goal in two months is active, which means that the narrative isn’t dead, just hibernating.
Star Citizen
Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 3.23.1a PTU.9201935 to the PTU. There’s no ETA for it going live, and until then, the game is sorta unplayable again. Server crashes, disappearing trains, T-posing NPCs, all the classics are back. And both the Squadron 42 and Star Citizen monthly reports are out, and there are SO many refactors that we can look forward to seeing – whenever they get around to finishing them. Plus, it turns out that Squadron 42 is not “feature complete” after all, because there is always time to research and add just one more thing to the game. And more dialogue. And more NPCs. And more forklifts.
Helldivers 2
Helldivers 2 did some strange and interesting things over the last couple of weeks. They messed up a new mission type, and then acknowledged it and patched it in about a day. They also hired a new CEO and the old CEO stepped down voluntarily and took over as creative director. And then they said they were going to slow down their patch release cadence and focus on quality instead. So weird and interesting.
Community Questions
- What do you think of the changes announced by the Helldivers team? Are they setting a good example or have they doomed themselves to obscurity?
- What is going to make the next Elite Dangerous ship special? More guns? Longer range? Stealthier? Faster? What niche has yet to be exploited?
