Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous is sorting through the consequences of a failed community goal for one of the least popular Powerplay faction owners in the game and gearing up for the destruction of the 6th Thargoid Titan: Thor. But the more interesting thing that happened this week is that we discovered that Frontier has given Elite a marketing budget. And even more interesting is what they spent that money on. They sent our hard-won guineaquids to a company called Just About, and we’re just about to tell you what they’ve got planned.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 3.24.0-PTU.9284528 to the Wave 2 PTU Server. They’ve hit a bit of a snag with this one, and needed to delay the release for a short time in order to QUOTE deploy a shelf” END QUOTE to deal with a QUOTE crash that is looping them END QUOTE. We hope that went OK. In other news, Star Citizen can just release anything it wants and then fix it in post, and at the end of the day, griefing is just PvP.

Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 is very sorry that they took away all of Tony’s fun last week, and they have issued an apology. Well, not to him directly, more of a general acknowledgement that they can no longer be the enemies of fun. Arrowhead’s game director posted an open letter several places online promising that some new changes in mechanics and philosophy should be coming in the next 60 days. For example QUOTE Our intention is that balance should be fun, not “balanced” for the sake of balance. END QUOTE That’s not quite an apology, but it’s close enough. Also in the plan is rethinking primary weapons, fire, bug priorities, game performance and Chargers. They’re also thinking about creating a dedicated beta server. They should definitely do that last one.

Community Questions

  • What do you think about the new Just About program? Is this a great way to spend their marketing budget? Or should they bring it house and give away Arx-prizes instead?
  • What are the downsides to spinning up beta servers for live games? Can you think of any hands-down, show-stopping reasons to NOT have public testing in a live service game?
