Links & The Like

Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous has done the impossible: they’ve delayed the release of a major patch due to feedback from beta testers. There is no way this should ever happen in the year of our lord 2024, but it did. And Frontier is pushing PowerPlay 2.0 back an entire WEEK. How dare they! First they listen to a test audience, and then they give a particular deadline? What kind of example are they setting for all the other game companies out there? And in other news, the next Thargoid Titan is ready to “go boom real good.” If you’re listening to this on Tuesday, it’s probably too late.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 3.24.2 LIVE.9378772 to the Live Server. Just as promised, it is NOT 3.18 broken, but it’s trying very hard to live up to that standard. But that’s not all, campers! 4.0 has gone to the Evocati. And CIG wants those testers to just forget about their NDA for a brief moment and post all the screenshots and playthrough videos they want! They’re setting up what they’re calling a “4:250” test, meaning 4 servers with 250 players per server. CIG is REALLY confident about this. I mean, they made a TRAILER for a SERVER TEST. Also, we have yet another tiny indication that a console version of Squadron 42 is on its way, and it’s all because of a classic gamer trick. Finally, it’s time for another round of “game website discovers that Star Citizen may not be telling its fans the whole truth.”

Mechwarrior 5:Clans, Starfield, and Helldivers 2

Helldivers 2 released their 63-day patch and there’s a lot to love in it – until they undercut their game’s biggest selling point: the pucker factor. But research badgers indicate that it may already be fixed. And Starfield’s expansion is just as supremely OK as the rest of the game. Really, it’s really OK. And Mechwarrior 5: Clans is out and stompy robot fans everywhere are very excited about this.

Community Questions

  • How do you feel about CIG starting pre-production on a medieval fantasy game?
  • Is Frontier really going to end the Thargoid War, or are they going to find a way to keep that last Titan – and a whole category of gameplay – alive?
