Links & The Like

Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous. So wow. Very excite. Much nice. The end of the Thargoid war, Powerplay 2.0 appears to have found a groove, the new system colonization feature, and – drum roll please – the promise of a ROADMAP for 2025 during the next Frontier Unlocked show. There’s just a lot going on in a game that – last year at this time – we were wondering if FDev was going to quietly retire to the back pasture. If Tony wasn’t so far behind writing shownotes, I bet he would list a lot more things he wanted to talk about.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 4.0 9470730 to the Live (Preview) server! But, really, is it LIVE? Nothing works, people can’t log in, they’re getting “First Spawn” errors, and the 3.24 server is still running in parallel. Hmm, that SOUNDS like a live product that CIG would release, except for the part where they keep a so-called “stable” version running. So we’ll turn it into a big debate that no one will win. Also, the firings at CIG continue with the reported departure of several top men. Top. Men. And to replace them, it looks like Mrs. Chris Roberts – Sandi Gardiner – may be coming back to the company. Finally, we get a letter from the chairman, with a whole new focus for the company. Again.

No Man’s Sky & Helldivers 2

No Man’s Sky is giving the gift of Ghosts of Expeditions Past by giving players another chance to earn the Iron Vulture until Christmas day, then running 3 more old Expeditions during January in case you missed out on them earlier. They’ve also been nominated for the “Labor of Love” category in this year’s Steam Awards. And Helldivers 2 snagged nominations in three categories: Game of the Year, Most Innovative Gameplay, and Better With Friends. They’ve also released a new update, Omens of Tyranny, which delivers the long-teased Illuminate faction. That, of course comes with a new warbond, and a new capitalist patriotic democratic money making opportunity.

Community Questions

  • Does paying for IP licensing justify charging real cash for in-game functional items? Or should devs just sell skins and paint jobs for the nostalgia factor?
  • Does Star Citizen’s focus on “performant” updates come at the cost of the features promised for 1.0? Does 4.0 = MVP?
