Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous is trying to ease back on the grind blocking its new colonization system. They’ve deployed seven megaships around the bubble for convenient one-stop shopping for all your starport building needs. But there’s still no solution for having to haul all the stuff to the new system. And there’s been some confusion and disappointment in the new starport economy. It seems like the usual Elite method of “let people figure things out by screwing up massively” may not be the ideal way to approach the new gameplay. It might work in combat scenarios where you can get back to shooting Thargoids 10 minutes later and 5 million credits poorer. But spending a few days hauling supplies only to find out that stations don’t talk to each other? That’s not so much fun. Also, station deployment is outpacing Frontier’s usual weekly maintenance window, so it seems like it’s still pretty popular.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 4.1 PTU 9641265 to the PTU server. Once again, there is little new to report. Gating content behind PvP is still making people mad, and the updated radar was lifted almost directly from Elite Dangerous, and CIG still hasn’t released their official or unofficial financials. HOWEVER, there is something new: #TonyWasWrong. He boldly predicted that CIG would close their Austin office before closing their LA office – WRONG! Wrong-o, wrong-itty, wrong, wrong! But not to worry, this closure is only so people can be closer to their teammates for collaboration and efficiency, and happy warm good times! And don’t worry about CIG being late on their CitizenCon announcement. That is coming soon (™).

Dune Awakening and Helldivers 2

Dune Awakening is releasing May 20, but preorders open on Monday, March 24, the day before this episode drops. The game will sell for $50 American and will also have premium versions that will give players a 5 day head start on the game. They appear to be planning to follow the X4 model of sustainment: sell the game, and sell optional DLCs that release alongside free updates. And Helldivers 2 released their new warbond: Borderline Justice. Complete with a lever action rifle, a bundle of dynamite, and a laser revolver, they’re trying hard to give Super Earth a wild west feel.

Community Questions

  • Do you think that a new feature with significant time commitments should come with a user manual?
  • Is there a better way to integrate single player progression with multiplayer games? Or was the Squadron 42/Star Citizen model the original model that should be perfected?
