Links & The Like

Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous delayed the release of the Type 11 mining ship until September 29. The good news is, they delayed the release in order to address feedback from their creator partners about the ship. The bad news, it’s still just a mining ship. But the good news is that it’s a REALLY GOOD mining ship. But the bad news is that the only thing it does is mining. But it’s really, REALLY good at it. It will change the mining game in Elite Dangerous. But only the mining game.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build Alpha 4.3.1 LIVE 10275505 to the Live server. To the surprise of no one who regularly listens to the show, some players lost everything in their inventory and some players received literally thousands of extra doodads in their electronic toyboxes. Persistent Entity Streaming continues to be neither persistent, nor streaming: DISCUSS. In other news, someone over at CIG apparently still listens to the show, and it appears they might be in the marketing department. We think this is true because the social media announcement for the medical gameplay features metric system measurements of the health goo AND gameplay areas of effect rather than distances for health goo effectiveness. Not only that, but yet another one of our many predictions about their injury system design has come true, with at least one player complaining that their injuries prevented them from accessing their ship. But there is good news, CIG’s scope creep tendencies aren’t confined to their game design; it also extends to their office design.

Jump Space

Jump Space is an early access, 4-player PVE co-op shooter that takes cues from Void Crew and Borderlands, with a backstory that kinda makes sense. It also has a decent tutorial, mostly understandable mechanics and the beginnings of witty NPC banter that needs to be rerecorded with real actors. But for $20, Tony says it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Community Questions

  • Is the four-person co-op PvE genre the new hotness or is it a time honored design that never really left us?
  • Should paid DLC be geared toward endgame as a default, or is it appropriate to drop it square in the middle of the “devil’s horns” between tutorial and endgame?
