Links & The Like

Elite: Dangerous

Elite Dangerous showed off their new mining drill SRV, the Rhino. It can carry 3 players and is armored and comes with some sort of resource equipment. It’s too large to fit into the current SRV hangars, so players will have to equip one of the new Vehicle Hangars – the same hangar that deploys the new Nomad explorer ship. MOST importantly, they are releasing a new Operation JUST LIKE WE TOLD THEM TO. Also, Dan Lazarides joins FDEV as Chief Marketing Officer. He previously worked at Sega and Bethesda, which are two companies that we have heard of that make and publish games. So that’s good.

Star Citizen

Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 4.10.0-PTU 12497254 to the PTU server. The patch notes for this release are entitled “RC1” – we assume for “release candidate 1,” which is odd because this is the 22nd version of 4.10.0. No, really. Tony counted them. 22 patches over 29 days, and THIS is Release Candidate 1. Anyway, that’s not the real news. The real news is that Star Citizen has gone viral. Once again, we’re going to test the proposition that there is no such thing as bad publicity. And this is going to be a hell of a test.

Helldivers 2 and Interstellar Frontier

Helldivers 2 released their latest update: Devoid of Liberty, and it’s recaptured the lighting in a bottle that was the original game. Horrible creatures, oddball humor, and absolute mayhem. Play it, it’s good. AND ALSO: Interstellar Frontier is a great new game developed by Henry. And he has just a short update for everybody.

Wonderful show everyone. I am still chuckling over CIG trying to prove that SC actually works well.

Q1: The video + streamer reaction videos + your podcast led me to explain my feels about the whole SQ42/SC situation in this wall of text:
It feels like a modified Schrodinger’s Cat to me.
Long ago, Chris Roberts promised me a kitten and said it was in that box right over there… He’d even drop by every week to tell me stories about how great that kitten was going to be. And he’d ask for another $5 to feed all the other kittens he had. But over the years, the box has a lot of crossed out “Don’t open until” dates and I’ve kinda gotten tired of hearing the stories, so I stopped listening and giving him money.. and he stopped dropping by. But the box is still there. I haven’t heard “happy noises” from it for a long while. Logic tells me that the cat is dead if it was ever in the box. But the box is still there. Maybe there’s a magic trick planned and that box will get swapped for a different one. Good stuff could happen, right? But the box still sits there. I’ve got a dog now, and I’m not sure she’d get along with a cat. What I really want is to stop wondering about the box. I don’t want to be cruel, so if he could just open the box and be an adult about it then that would be great. But at this point… I’m 98% sure there isn’t a live cat in there, so if somebody else (like the Calders) sets the box on fire then that ends the story just the same.

Q2: Maybe? You can “earn” ARX in game, right? And even if you can’t… perhaps not too much different than paying for DLC? FDev has a lot of goodwill, so I’d be likely to be happy after this long.

General: Any update on fixing the podcast Bat Signal? The rss feeds don’t work, I’m not on the Discord, and it’s only pure luck that I got (and saw) the “Twitch stream is live” notification that caused me to check the web page… Is the Chiv okay? Wotherspoon? Anyone?
