Elite: Dangerous
Elite Dangerous did nothing at all over the holidays, except stay online and be playable. So that’s good. On the other hand, all that uptime gave Tony the chance to notice all the things that are going wrong with the game right now. So, he’ll complain about that. Happy New Year everyone!
Star Citizen
Star Citizen released Early Access Pre-Alpha Release Candidate Prototype Experimental Test Build 4.0 9470730 to the Live (Preview) server – wait, that’s the same patch number we reported on the last show! So that must mean that CIG released a patch right before the holidays, and then gave their team a well-deserved break and the players some great new toys to play with on their vacation! HAHA, no! Within days of its release, research badgers were able to declare 4.0 LIVE (Preview) as being “3.18 Broken.” Database wizards had to make repairs, the mission system crashed, players were locked out of their accounts, inventories failed to update or just disappeared, and sometimes the screen just went black. These all happened along with the usual disappearing trains and murderous elevators. And now there are even old bugs/exploits that were supposedly “fixed” in 3.18 reappearing in 4.0. It’s a good thing that 2025 is going to focus on build quality rather than feature quantity.
HunterNet Starfighter
HunterNet Starfighter released a new video highlighting the evolution of its carrier design and gameplay, and you should check out all the progress.
In The Black
Also, In The Black – the game formerly known as Starfighter, Inc. – posted an update to their Kickstarter page – which is still known as Starfighter, Inc. – about maybe going to Early Access someday.
Community Questions
- Do you agree with Geoff that the network backbone is the most important component of an online game? Not the servers, not the mechanics, not the artwork, not the narrative?
